A house empties itself of a name. The inventory is incomplete on purpose.
In 1936, a young French archivist is sent to catalogue the papers of Maison Saint-Lys, a fading estate in Provence whose late mistress left behind unsent letters, botanical specimens, devotional fragments, and a pendant with a pale green stone. As René Marcel pieces together the life of the woman known as Madame Lys, he begins to suspect that her story did not begin in France — and that some inheritances survive only by disappearing.
